Winter Party 2-3

12/21-1/6 Winter Break
Reading

We continued asking questions about characters by completing a character study this week. We read 4 different books, which exposed the students to a variety of character personalities. To relate to to our word choice, we have been working on in writing, we used a character trait list to describe the personality of each character with specific and creative word. The students combined all the personality traits they collected for each character. Today we voted and picked the 6 top personality traits for each character.

Here is our list:

Mean Jean: rude, angry, strict, evil, unfriendly and grouchy

Katie Sue: generous, wacky, silly, brave, serious and thankful

Hansel: smart, brave, sneaky, poor, helpful and loving

Gretel: loving, smart, thoughtful, nervous, giving and helpful

Gingerbread Man: wild, quick, sneaky, stubborn, lucky and bold

Fox: greedy, selfish, evil, wise, unfriendly and dishonest

Gingerbread Girl: generous, nice, friendly, fearful, smart, afraid

Writing

Friendly letters have been our main focus this week in writing. We spent time reviewing the 5 parts of a letter (date, greeting, body, closing and signature) and their correct placement. Each students was assigned a secret buddy to write letters to until December 20th. Each Tuesday and Thursday they will receive a new letter from their secret buddy. On the last day before break we will have a reveal activity.

We also used a brainstorm sheet to organize a letter to a solider. Today they students finished their final copy letters which will be sent to the troops.

Next week we will be working with writing using transitions. As the students become better writers their stories become longer. Transitions help students learn when to create new paragraphs and also help build fluency of their writing.

Math

We worked with place value. The students are able to read and write numbers up to a million.

We worked with both fractions and decimals this week. The students worked with base-ten block manipulatives to identify how tenths and hundredths relate to 1 whole. We also practiced writing equivalent fractions and decimals. The students were able to see tenths or hundredths to create a fraction or a decimal.

We used the following model to help us:

hundredths = ?/100 = . __ __
tenths = ?/10 = .__

two tenths = 2/10 = .2
twenty hundredths = 20/100 = .20 or .2
twenty-two hundredths = 22/100 = .23

**This is a complex but the students are not expected to have mastered. But it was just introduced to the concept. The students did a great job working with he manipulatives and we continue to work with this topic next week.

The students used the base ten flat to figure out how many hundredths were in each letter of their name. They then converted the hundredths into decimal and fraction form.

We will have the unit 5 test before winter break.

Science

How is weather different from climate?
The students worked hard to answer this questions this week. The students have been collecting and studying different types of weather the last few weeks. The students decided weather was the day to day change in the earth atmosphere. They then learned this week climate is the usual weather in a specific place over time. Information to determine a weather's climate has been determined by collecting information about the area's weather over a long period of time.

Next week we will study the characteristics which make up each of the different climate zones.

Social Studies
The students used personal recess conflicts to practice acting out their new conflict stoppers. Each conflict was examined to find the conflict starter. Small groups then acted out how a conflict stopper could successfully stopping the conflict.

Here are the 10 conflict starters and stoppers:

Book reports were completed and shared this week. The student were also to share all about their biography. While presenting the other student wrote down notes about people they would like to read about after hearing their classmates project.

Genres for future book reports
November: historical fiction
December: NO BOOK REPORT
January: Folktale
February: Fantasy
March/April: Non-fiction

The students explored using their thick and thin questions to ask questions about the setting. We used both fiction and non-fiction books to explore how different setting effect the story. The student were able to ask meaningful questions. They also practice finding the answers to their questions by looking for clues from the author in their book.

Writing
I can show emotions through voice in my writing.
The students experienced many different writing samples and decided what emotions the author was trying to convey with their voice. Then students picked their own emotion and used their personal writing voice to convey the emotion. Their writings were inspired by Memoirs of a Goldfish. Each students picked a domesticated animal and an emotion and created their story. The story were taken through the editing process and each student produced a final copy.

Math
We had the following goals in math this week.
How multiplication and division are inverse properties and can undo one another
Using multiplication and division fact families to create number sentences
Practicing multiplication short cuts

The students are being exposed to the relationship between multiplication and division. They are also using array and repetitive addition to solve multiplication problems. We also practiced with fact families and creating 2 multiplication and 2 division problems from each family. Learning the 0 and 1  short cut helped the students recognize what will happen anytime you multiply by 1 or 0.

Social Studies
The students were able to experience their own mock classroom on Tuesday. After studying each candidate the student cast their own vote for president. We also studied character traits of different character in election themed books. After collecting the responsibilities of president the students decided which book character would make the best president.

Here are some pictures of the classroom election

Reading
Book reports and asking meaning questions have been our focus this week. The students have been working toward asking meaningful questions, which help them better understand their book. You can work on this skill at home by having them ask questions while they read. After they ask their questions help them look for the answer. Did their questions help them better understand their book? If it did then they asked a meaningful question!

Almost every student has completed the rough draft of their biography book report. Next week we will finish up the final copies and begin sharing our book reports with the class!

Writing
This week in writing we worked on our organization by trying different methods of pre-writing. The student were able to see how planning before you begin writing makes your story easier to write. Look for their spooky stories they wrote coming home in their backpacks tonight!

Math
We have started Unit 4 and we have began working with mutiplication arrays and basic multiplication facts. Please let me know if you are having any issues with xtra math and helping your students access the program from home. We will continue to work with multiplication word problems next week.

Science
This week we further explored friction. The students completed a two day lab deciding if more items in the same place would create more friction or less friction. From our lab we concluded a water bottle with more rice created enough friction to lift the bottle off the desk using a dowel rod. The students created more friction by tapping the bottle on the desk and and adding more rice.

Social Studies
The election is almost here! This week we used our reading and writing skills to study and collect information about two of our presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. They shared their research by creating a Venn diagram to compare and contrast these president. Next week we will learn about the election process and hold a mock election in our class Tuesday.

Writing
The students created stories which captured their adience with an interesting lead. Their stories will be displayed outside our classroom in the hallway.

Word Work
On Monday the students will receive a new sheet of word work words. The following is a list of activities you can do with your students at home to practice their words.

Activity - Remind your child to sort the words in categories like the ones we did in school. Your child should read each word aloud during this activity. Ask your child to explain to you why the words are sorted in a particular way-what does the sort reveal about spelling in general? Be certain to discuss word meanings when appropriate.  Variation: Ask your child to sort them a 2nd time as fast as possible, remembering to read and compare each word to the heading words.

Activity - Do a blind or no peeking sort with your child. Lay down a word from each category as a header and then read the rest of the words aloud. Your child must indicate where the word goes without seeing it, as well as spell the word aloud. Lay the word down and let your child move it if he or she is wrong. Repeat if your child makes more than one error.

Activity - Do a writing sort to prepare for the test. As you call out the words in a random order, your child should write them in the correct category. Call out any words your child misspells a second or even third time.
(Thank you Mrs. Harber for making this list of at home activities for word work)
Reading
September reading logs went home yesterday and are due at the end of the month. In today's take home folder students will be bringing home thwie first graded "Letter to the Teacher" about a non-fiction book they read this week.

The students also completed their first science journal entries
