Book Report Note Packets due Monday
Please make sure your student has completed their book report note packet. Each student will bring their notes and book back to school Monday. On Monday, the students will choose their book report project and begin working. Thank you for your support at home and allowing your child to read their biography.

Reading
This week the students worked with asking thick questions. They practiced using a thick questions lead to write thier thick questions. Thick questions require using their schema and looking for book details to answer. If you would like to work on asking thick questions at home, I have included the directions the students use to ask thick questions. Next week we will continue to work with asking thick question to help us better comprehend the books we are reading.

Writing
The students practiced pre-writing before writing a story. Each students was given a spooky story lead. The student determined who their character would be, the problem and the solution of their students. Once they completed their prewriting they started writing their rough draft. We have completed this process with three different story leads. Next week each student will pick their favorite story out of the three. They will self edit, peer edit and finally edit with the teacher. Their story will be send home Wednesday to share with you on Halloween!

The following is a picture of the students sharing their first story with their classmates. This sharing method called "inside outside circle" allows the student to share their story with multiple students.

Math
The students took their Unit 3 math test today. This test involved measuring in centimeters and inches, perimeter, area, word problems and money. We will correct out tests on Monday and they will come home Tuesday. Next week we will begin Unit 4.

I hope you all have a wonderful extended weekend with your children!

Reading

The students have continued with asking questions while reading. The students are focusing asking questions using specific details from the text. They will ask questions before, during and after reading their book. This week we will continue to look for answers to the questions we ask which reading. If they author does not give us the answer we are practicing inferring the answer. To infer the answer to the questions the students use the information from the book to answer their questions with their "best guess."

Book Reports

Last week I send home a book report packet and a biography book with each student.  The student did a great job of filling out their book report note packet. I have asked this month the students fill out these packets and read their book at home. On the 29th the students will bring the completed notes and books back to school. Then they will pick their project and complete it at school using the note packet they completed at home.

Math
On Wednesday the students will be taking their Unit 3 math test.
The test will include the following topics
Finding perimeter and area
Ballpark estimates of three digit numbers (rounding to the nearest 10 then adding or subtracting)
Measuring in centimeters and inches

The review for the test will come home on Tuesday.

Writing
The students have been working hard on editing their work. We have focused on editing run on sentences to create complete but removing unnecessary "ands." We have also been reading and reviewing the qualities which give a piece of writing fluency.  Each student completed a final copy which will be shared with you at parent teacher conferences.

Fall Party
The Fall party is Wednesday the 31st. Please remember to send in $2 for your students to cover the cost of the party. Thank you for all the students who have already sent in their money.

I look forward to seeing you all this week for parent teacher conferences!
