Midterm

Along with a math and science grade students’ midterms will show their mastery on our skills of focus for the first half of first quarter. The midterms are coded as follows to describe their mastery level:

A stared skill indicates the skills has been mastered and the students can independently teach someone else to do the skill.

A blank skill means the student needs assistance or reminders to complete the skill.

A highlighted skill means the students cannot complete this skill without one-on-one attention.

Reading

Now we have established our rules and procedures for sharing what we have learned from reading, the students are asking questions while they read. This week we will practice asking questions (thick questions) which deepen the understanding of what they are reading. We will also begin to look for the answers to their questions and what to do if they author doesn't give them their answer.

Writing

We will continue to practice writing personal narratives. The students are working hard to share true stories about their lives. We are also working on the grammar skills including writing complete sentences and using dialog in their writing. At the end of the quarter students will choose their favorite personal narrative piece to publish!

Science

The students completed their weather and climate unit last week. You can find the skills we worked on in your students’ midterm report.

Social Studies

This week the students have begun their conflict unit. Over the next two weeks the students will learn common conflict starters. Then they will also practice conflict stoppers to solve problems on their own. We are working with the language we use to keep conflicts from escalating or starting in the first place. This unit allows students to see how social studies concepts can be used in their everyday lives.
