November 11th Update

Reading

Until Thanksgiving Break the students will be reviewing asking question before, during and after reading. The students are also observing how illustrations help a reader convey the mood the author is trying to set with the text.

Writing

The students are continuing to write in the genre of non-fiction. They are currently working on feature articles. After study Time for Kids Magazine the students observed how different text features are used to convey non-fiction information. The students are using the information they collected last week to write a feature article based on an animal of their choice.

Social Studies

The students are starting a social studies unit on map skills. In the next few weeks students will learn the cardinal directions, how to read a map key and finding different places on the map. The students will also learn the states which border Missouri.

Reading
The students are working with reading books in the same series. We are complaring settings and characters between these like books. This week we will work with plot and central message. We are practicing supporting the central message of the book with details from the text.
 
Writing
The genre focus for this quarter is a feature article. This means students are working will writing non-fiction pieces. Currently, the students are working with a non-fiction topic to create a non-fiction chapter book. At home students can collect information at their topic too!
 
Science
The students are beginning their unit on magnets this week. The students will explore what is attracted to magnets, how poles interact and the strength of a magnet is determined. They will also learn how static electricity can also cause objects to repeal and attract each other.
