February 15 Update

Upcoming Events

2/18 No school

3/1 Prairie Branch Carnival

4/4 Kindergarten enrollment from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.


Reading
The student have been working with determining importance. We are practicing pulling the most important information out of non-fiction books. Next week we will work with non-fiction writings, which the students have to use to solve problems.
 
Math
This week the students were introduced to parentheses in math sentences. We also related division to multiplication. The students are continuing to take their multiplication times test on Fridays.

Writing
The students practiced using different parts of speech to write poetry. We also worked with the Yankee Doodle song to create parodies of the poem. The students listened for syllables and matched rhyming words to create their new parodies.

Social Studies:
We worked in small groups on a reader's theater story on Harriet Tubman. Next week we will use non-fiction texts about presidents to continue our practice of determining importance.
 
Science:
The student worked with life cycle vocabulary words. Next week the students will review everything we have learned about animal and plant life cycles. We will wrap up our life cycle unit with a life cycle test next Friday.

February 8th Update

Midterm
The midterms will come home today stapled in planners. Please sign and return the bottom section.

Valentine's Day Party
Our Valentine's Day party is next Thursday from 2-3. On Thursday, if you choose, your student can bring a box or special bag to put their valentines in. I will also provide bags for any students who does not bring a container. We will being passing valentines out during the party Thursday. Class list was send home at the beginning of the week, please let me know if you need an additional copy.

Word Work Rotations
We started our word work rotations this week. After the midyear word work test in January students where placed in new groups based on their new scores. Every Monday and Friday they will switch to their word work rooms. Tuesday-Thursday they will practice their words in our classroom with a partner from their group.

Reading
The students worked with their non-fiction books to determine importance. Each students was given a non-fiction reader, which they shared with a small group. The students looked at text features to collect interesting facts about their books. Next week we will continue to work with determining importance. We will also work with fluency by reading poetry and reading in pairs.





Math
This week the students worked with doubles in multiplication. We also practice recognizing how multiplication facts are used in everyday life. We will continue to work with multiplication next week and start connecting multiplication to division facts. We are also continuing our Friday multiplication times tests.

WritingThe students completed their five paragraph essays this week! Today they were able to read and share their essay with the class. The essays will be displayed in the hallway to show off their hard work.

Science:
The student were able to learn about different types of organism based life cycles including the human, frog and plant life cycles. Next week we will use the information we collected to find the similarities in plant and organism life cycles.

February 1st Update

Reading

The students complete summaries for their folktale book reports. Each students shared their summary with the class which included the characters, theme, setting, conflict, resolution and favorite part of the book.

Next week we will continue to look at non-fiction text features with our science unit on life cycles. In reading we will also work with fluency when ready poetry.


Math

Today the students took their Unit 6 test. On Monday we will go over the answers for the tests and they will come home with the students on Tuesday. The Unit 7 parents guide will also come home on Tuesday. Unit 7 focuses of multiplication and division facts and patterns.


Writing

The 3 items from their brown bag narrative writing will come home today. The students used these items to help them write the introduction paragraph and the body paragraphs for their five paragraph narrative essay. Next week they will write their conclusion paragraph and start the editing process. By the end of the week they will have a edited copy of their narrative essay ready to share.

Science:
This week the students examined the common steps in any plant life cycle. We concluded every plants starts from a seed or spore. Then the plant must grow and mature until it is ready to produce new seeds or spores. Next week we will be looking at a variety of non-fictions texts to look at the life cycles of both plants and animals.
